Expand Your Cultural Perspective Among Neighbors and Friends During the Festival of Joy

Celebrate Indian culture at the 2nd Annual Festival of Joy! On Saturday, March 30th, Kalachandji’s and the Crow Museum of Asian Art will present the Dallas Festival of Joy, the kick-off for the Dallas Mayor’s Cultural Month. Don’t miss this free festival on Saturday afternoon!

The Festival of Joy – also celebrated as the Festival of Chariots, or Ratha Yatra – has its roots in ancient India and the bhakti tradition and is celebrated in major cities all across the world. Krishna, a Sanskrit name for God, has been away from His childhood home since He became King. When his best friends decide to visit His kingdom, they see him in His fancy royal outfits and feel He is a stranger. In their longing, they pick up the ropes that yoke the horses to His grand chariot and affectionately force Him to return home with them. This festival is a chance for us to do the same – to reconnect and celebrate family and friends – while feeling that same joy.

The Dallas Festival of Joy will begin with a parade from the Dallas Museum of Art on Flora Street to Klyde Warren Park, where the festival will continue until 8:00 p.m. Participants will pull the colorful chariot by hand along Flora Street to Klyde Warren Park, accompanied by the singing of ancient Sanskrit mantras and the sounds of traditional musical instruments.

The park’s main stage will feature non-stop classical music and dance performances, and there will be a variety of cultural and educational exhibits including traditional craft and cooking demos, yoga and meditation instruction, face painting, mehndi (henna tattoos), traditional dress-up, ethnic street food stalls, and a free vegetarian feast.

With its family-friendly feel and free admission, there’s no reason not to take part in the 2nd Annual Festival of Joy! To learn more about scheduled activities, visit www.fojdallas.com.
